Gary,

Saw that you were going to discuss Gene Autry. Thought, if it is ok to pass along a couple of entries from my Local History Chronicle of Champaign County. I have been compiling our local history for 12 years now. I guess I have nothing better to do! Anyway I found these entries for Gene Autry. A couple of these are according to the News-Gazette. Champaign has been very lucky to have many famous cowboy personalities here. Will Rogers, Smiley Burnette,Buffalo Bill, and also Gene Autry. I know I am forgetting others but here are a few entries from old news clippings

May 30,1896: Buffalo Bill and his Wild West show are here, and the people who wanted to see him and his show began to come early in order to have the whole day for it. No other man in his life of business has ever held so peculiar a place before the American public as Buffalo Bill. Miss Anna Oakley , The peerless lady wing shot appeared to dazzle the crowd with her shooting.

June 2, 1951: Saturday night radio WDWS: Johnny Dollar, Vaughn Monroe Show, Gene Autry, Hopalong Cassidy, Gangbusters, Broadway is my Beat, Saturday Night Dancing Party, News, Baseball, sports, Dance Orchestra, Dance Parade, Baseball News, Sign Off.

June 28, 1943:Rantoul: A crowd of 2,000 soldiers were in the audience here last evening when Technical Sergeant Gene Autry, famous Hollywood cowboy, now in the army air force, broadcast his weekly radio show from the AAFTTC school. Autry sang several songs for which he is noted for.

July 28, 1950: At the RKO Orpheum-Today and Saturday-"The Asphalt Jungle" starring Sterling Hayden-Always Two Big Hits! -Plus-Co-hit Gene Autry in "Beyond the Purple Hills" XTRA-Thrilling new chaper #6. "Atom Man vs. Superman."

August 4, 1909: Buffalo Bill, a familiar figure, who is in the city today with his great aggregation of people of the plains. He was up bright and early this morning and behind a pair of fine Arabian horses took a drive about the city. "I always did like the looks of Champaign," said he "and I would not mind living in this city."

Enjoy your show and I am a big fan of Cowboy music too. Hope you can have Don Edwards on sometime. Love his music. In fact I believe he did a tribute to Gene Autry.

Thanks for listening, Chuck Fanakos
