Certainly one of the things that is most rewarding about what I do is to have guests at the end of the interview...or conversation (which I prefer to have)...is to have a guest say "That was fun," or "I look forward to talking to you again soon!" I am so plesaed that happens on a regular basis. What is especially cool is when a personal connection is made that goes beyond on-air conversations. Friendships have been formed with authors such as Ben Alba ("Inventing late Night" on Steve Allen and "The Tonight Show"), Thomas Santopietro (author of books on Barbra Streisand, Doris Day and Frank Sinatra), Tony nominated actor Brian Lane Green, Rick Kogan (The Chicago Tribune), actor Henry Winkler, radio legend Roy Leonard and more. Henry Winkler actually after our first conversation (he was a guest on my very first show), and invited himself back on the show. He has since been on several times. Merv Griffin also invited himself back. This Christmas is was great to get holiday greetings from the wonderful Marion Ross, who never forgets me and also Justin. We have received easter and Christmas greetings from her, and her invitation to us to see her perform in the play "Over the River and Through the Woods" was really nice. One of the funnest moments on the show was when Marion and I surprised Henry Winkler by having her on the air with him on my 1000th show. Neat monent. Also great to hear from Keith Emerson and his wonderful girlfriend mari this Christmas. We made a great connection when he came to Champaign to hear the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra and guest artist Jeffrey Biegel perform his "Piano Concerto #1 last March. We had fun meeting and also hangin gout after the concert for some food and drink. He talked a lot to Justin about their shared passion for fishing (in fact Keith signed Justin's program "Best Fishes!"). We had such a good time, Keith and Mari delayed their trip to Chicago by a day so they could be on the show live in the studio the day after for an hour. It was great, and the dinenr we had together afterwards (sushi) was wonderful as well. How great it was awhile after the dinner to answer the phone at home and have Keith Emerson on the line. Great time. Even more special was months later when Mari was in Japan visiting her family, shew found a fishing good luck charm and fed ex'd it to Justin and told him the story behind it. He carries it with him all the time now. How special for her to think of him. Special people for sure...and fun to make new friends just doing what I do every day.
